COVID-19 FAQs for foster carers

What is happening with medicals and medical appointments?

What will happen with children’s medicals?

Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust will continue to do health assessments on a priority basis, these will be done by phone. If your child is due a review health assessment a nurse will make contact with you by phone.

Initial health assessments and adoption medicals will be completed by a doctor by phone.

The children's nursing team continue to offer a duty phone call service mon-fri 9am until 5pm for any health queries 0121 466 3648

Do the children placed with me still need to have their dental and optician checks?

Non-urgent dental and optician appointments are currently being postponed but basic services are in place, you can make telephone contact with the dental and optician practices that your child is registered with if you have a concern.

What about other health appointments?

If your child is usually seen for other appointments you should be contacted by the service. Non urgent appointments will either be postponed or completed digitally (video link or telephone call).

What should I do about children’s prescriptions?

Call your GP practice to renew prescriptions, wait times will be longer so please allow ample time before medications run out to order a repeat prescription. Do not go into the surgery or to walk-in centres instead call 111 for urgent medical advice and 999 for life threatening emergencies.
