Adoption and Fostering Support Week for LGBTQ+ Parents

Published: 4th Oct 2022

New Family Social lead Adoption and Fostering Support Week for LGBTQ+ parents, 3 - 7 October 2022.

1 in 7 adoptions in England in 2019 were to same-sex couples. 1 in 4 adopters with Birmingham Children's Trust are LGBTQ+.

Record numbers of LGBTQ+ people now foster and adopt - and all of them will need additional support at some time. Adoption & Support Week for LGBTQ+ families is a new campaign - backed by the State of the System survey - to support these families, whether they are new parents or have parented for many years.

Led by New Family Social, the week hightlights support for LGBTQ+ parents and carers, shares their stories and shares recommendations for agencies who can offer additional support.

Thinking of adopting or fostering with Birmingham Children's Trust?

Birmingham Children’s Trust, have a long history of helping LGBTQ+ people realise their dream of becoming a family through adoption. We welcome adoption and fostering application from anyone who can provide a child with a safe and loving home to grow up in.

How many LGBTQ+ adoptions are there each year and how long we will have to wait for a child?

One in four of Birmingham Children’s Trust adopters are LGBTQ+  so you’re in good company!

The amount of time you wait to be matched will depend on the type of child or children you’re looking for and the needs of the children in our care at the time you apply.

Our expert matching team will work with you to find the right match for your child and your family. At Birmingham children’s Trust you will have one social worker throughout your adoption journey who will get to know you very well. They might even have a child in mind for you before you are approved so the process could be very quick, but it is different for everyone. Being an LGBTQ+ couple will not have an impact on how long it takes for you to be matched with a child.

Specialist support

Birmingham Children's Trust Adoption Agency, now known as Adopt Birmingham, offer life-long support to all our adopters.

We understand the importance of having the right peer support for our LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers.  That’s why we provide a free membership to New Family Social, a UK charity led by LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers, to help you through your adoption journey. New Family Social can provide you with peer support, support groups, access to publications, regional and national training.
