Skating spectacular Sunday

Children and carers take to the ice – children as young as two joined in the fun on the rink!
Published: 5th Dec 2018

Over 1,000 children and young people in care and their families and carers had a magical morning last Sunday, 2 December 2018, thanks to the generosity of Emily Danter, owner of Ice Skate Birmingham.

Children and young people were given an exclusive three-hour session at Ice Skate Birmingham, one of the best outdoor ice skating rinks in the country, as well as the chance to ride on the iconic Birmingham Big Wheel.

Achieving more together

After the success of the event Natalie Loon, corporate parenting manager said, “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of Emily Danter and her team at Ice Skate Birmingham which gave 1,000 children, young people and families a memorable day out."

The day provided a unique opportunity. Natalie explains that, "for some children and their carers it was the first time they had ever tried on ice skates- they had some real fun!"

"We are extremely grateful for this amazing act of kindness from Emily and Ice Skate Birmingham, and we know it was a morning that will never be forgotten by our young people judging by the smiles on their faces.

Corporate Parenting

Natalie says that when we became the Birmingham Children's Trust she "dreamed that we would be able to offer our children in care these sort of opportunities and now we are seeing those dreams come true. This is corporate parenting at it’s very best!"

Along with use of the rink and Big Wheel, the children also had the opportunity to Father Christmas, be entertained by face-painters, a balloon modeller, and a magic selfie mirror with dress-up costumes to try on. It was truly an event for all ages.

The event was supported by a large number of volunteers from businesses the Trust works closely with and is supported by, including Willmott Dixon, Fortem, Barclays, and Engie.
